MAKING THE CHANGES 2009-2010

COSTA 2007-2008

Commemoration of Slave Trade Abolition was a project for the marking of the bicentenary of the abolition of the trans-Atlantic slave trade. Sul’Art has worked with groups of artists and people on their interpretation of what the bicentenary meant to them. Groups (including many school children) worked with themes of migration, identity, celebration of difference, critiques of consumerism, enjoying a contemporary African art form, intergenerational dialogue, to name some. Slavery is such an inhuman act that a variety of positive aspects of being alive were celebrated. To make the experience of being involved in the project even more powerful, COSTA combined with the professional jazz show ‘King Cotton’, which put alive the story of the cotton industry (deeply complicit with the exploitation of both planet, black and white working class people) in music, song and film.

MAKING THE CHANGES 2009

Year 2009 – 2010 has been a transition time for many residents of the Bristol community, especially those who are in need and suffering from social issues such as unemployment, isolation, depression and a lack of opportunity to learn new skills.

The project was focused on the following target groups:

Sul’Art collaborated with local organisations and professional workshop leaders to deliver a combined programme of activities, using the arts to enable the participants to learn new skills and express themselves creatively. The activities included: music –– IT - creative writing – music technology – photography and Photoshop.

As a result the programme helped to enrich capacity building; many of the participants gained new skills, developed confidence and felt inspired.

Comments from the participants:

I have participated to the making the change project. This was very fruitful. It teaches you how to set up a bizness, give you a clear idea what to do….. and what direction to take.

I want to see this course in the future, as it gives us a mature and professional approach how to do business and art.

I really like the idea of bringing various artists together from different cultures and with a variety of talents and sharing – crossing over together creatively!!! Very enriching for everyone involved – Thank you. Sarah Jane

From this project many of us found that there are still lots of gaps and needs. Sul-Art has priority to continue to help and serve the community by investing in people.

Sul-Art would like to say a BIG THANK YOU to all contributors to this project; facilitators, workshop leaders, partners and especially to the South West Foundation (funding providers) and the Learning Curve.

AMANI 2009 The AMANI Project was set up to engage the Muslim community in Bristol as part of the PREVENT Programme. The project started in May 2009 with development and research work; we worked with secondary schools (The Metropolitan College and The City Academy). Professional artists such as Dr Edson Burton from Bristol and Dawud from Pakistan offered arts activities including music and poetry which led to high quality performances in local schools and community events in Bristol. During the activities, students worked around several topics e.g. Amani (Peace), Harmony, Terrorism, A Sense of Belonging. Muslim students collaborated with students from other faith groups and community backgrounds, which promoted harmony, cohesion and cultural understanding.
